Mr. Brooks-Miller Goes To Washington
It was a week ago today that I found out about receiving the Rutherford Fellowship at Survivor Corps in Washington DC. I was in Peoria, Illinois visiting family when I received the call, asking if I could start on Monday. I am a resident of southern Missouri so the next morning I jumped in my car and made the almost 400 mile trip home, packed up most of my things on Friday and was on the road by 5 am Saturday morning. From Springfield, Mo to Washington DC is another 1,100 miles and there is not much to look at through Illinois, Indiana or Kentucky. Also, I forgot my CDs so was forced to listen to the radio the entire way, if I ever hear Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas or that song about “how forever feels,” again, I will go insane. After crashing with some close friends in Southern Virginia, I arrived in DC late Sunday night after a bad experience with a GPS system, the first and probably last time I will ever use one. I had no place to stay just a few phone numbers of friends of friends; luckily I got a hold of someone and have been sleeping in their spare room since. I had been to DC before for a few family vacations, most recently for the Obama inauguration, but never to work. I love adventure so taking it all in has been fun and exciting, coming from Springfield, Missouri this town seems like a different world, everything moves very quickly. Walking in that first day I didn’t know what to expect. I was definitely a little nervous, but I have definitely been through more stressful situations in my life. So far it has been a wonderful experience, the people at Survivor Corps, I’m still learning all the names, are polite and professional. I will be working in the US Progam, but will also tag along with Government Relations, for the summer. As a Veteran of the War in Iraq, I am very excited to be working on these projects. More to follow………
